Greetings Colleagues,

Below, please find two links of interest. We are particularly grateful to Dianne Read for contributing so generously toward our efforts to raise funds for Louisiana's NFB BELL Program and hope you will have a look at the first link and consider purchasing some of her fine products.

The second link is to a new summer offering by the NFB's Jernigan Institute in Baltimore for students in grades 8-12. Have a look and share widely with your students.

Have a marvelous evening and a very Happy Easter!

Organizing for Action
Kathy --

We're taking some big steps forward in the effort to reduce gun violence.

Late last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced a bill to institute universal background checks on gun sales, strengthen gun trafficking laws, and make our schools safer.

This is our chance to band together and push forward on legislation that will make a difference. Join the team that will fight until it's the law.

Right now, while Congress is on recess, opponents of this common-sense legislation -- like the powerful gun lobby -- are hoping to ramp up their fight, and scare reasonable members of Congress into voting against this reform.

That's why we can't sit back.

Volunteers around the country are holding events as part of a national Day of Action to make sure Congress knows that we're ready to take real, meaningful action to reduce gun violence. More than 150,000 OFA supporters have already signed up to take action on this issue -- and more folks are getting involved every day.

The question is: Will you be one of them?

Add your name today to join our fight to reduce gun violence:

More to come. For now, thanks.

National Federation of the Blind Launches Vehicle Donation Program

Baltimore, Maryland (March 19, 2013): The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the oldest and largest organization of blind people in the United States, today announced that it has partnered with Vehicles for Charity to launch a new vehicle donation program.  The NFB's vehicle donation program accepts almost any vehicle, including cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles and recreational vehicles.  All donations may be eligible for a tax donation on your federal income tax return.

Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind, said: "We are pleased to announce this new vehicle donation program.  By donating your vehicle to the National Federation of the Blind, you are helping to improve the lives of blind people across the country.  Your donation will go toward our work to increase the number of blind children learning Braille, to advocate for blind and other disabled persons to receive a fair working wage,  and to ensure a brighter future for all blind Americans."

Sent from my Samsung smartphone on AT&T.
Retinoblastoma is cancer of the eye that manifests in infants and toddlers. It leads to necessary enucleation or removal of the eye(s). Sometimes it returns once the victim is an adult as in musician Jeff Healy. Hopefully, with the discovery below and continued studies there will be a way to save the vision and more importantly the lives of these young people.  ~K

In addition to the braille Challenge, this activity introduces braille to new learners in a fun event;

http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/braille-games-makes-learning-fun-for-blind-children-fs931mc-196551571.html A Wisconsin school recently hosted an event where students who are blind gathered to learn Braille. Students played bingo and visited tables where they were able to interact with Braille letters printed on everyday items such as pizza boxes, juice cartons and cookies. LD News

Dear Kathy,

IEP Headquarters
The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is the cornerstone of a child's special education experience. It can also be a great source of stress and confusion for the parents and teachers involved. To the rescue: We've created an IEP Headquarters on LD.org — a new section of our site that brings all of our IEP content (checklists, personal stories, videos, our new "IEP Roadmap" infographic, and more) together in one convenient place. Most of our new IEP content answers questions that you, our community, have asked us via Facebook and other avenues.

Whether your child is just being evaluated or she's had an IEP for years, you're bound to find helpful and relevant IEP information and insights here. Check it out and let us know what you think!
Sincerely,
The NCLD Team
