Read Across Louisiana

LPB & THE LOUISIANA ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATORS WILL READ ACROSS LOUISIANA – AND AMERICA! On Saturday, February 26th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., LPB and LAE present "Read Across Louisiana" at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. Bring the kids out to hear wonderful stories read to them by local celebrities and others. There will also be literacy-related hands-on activities and giveaways. Similar events will be taking place at these locations around the state: Prien Lake Mall - 496 West Prien Lake Road, Lake Charles Mall of Acadiana - 5725 Johnston Street, Lafayette The Louisiana Boardwalk, 540 Boardwalk Blvd., Bossier City Alexandria Mall - 3437 Masonic Drive, Alexandria Pecanland Mall - 4700 Milhaven Road #200, Monroe On Wednesday, March 2nd, LPB and LAE are asking celebrities, teachers, librarians, parents, grandparents – anyone and everyone – to read "The Cat in the Hat" to a class at a school, Head Start, daycare, or at a library. March 2nd is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and we have chosen "The Cat in the Hat" in honor of the new PBS kids' series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Zane's Valentine's Bag

Zane's Valentine Bag
Inside: A bear that sings and some "kid crack" also known as M&M and Skittles candy.
He placed the bag next to his chair while he worked. Then he wanted both sides of the bag labeled in braille to read: "Zane's Valentine's Day Bag" on one side and "M&M's and Skittles" on the other.  He's learned the "AND" sign and wanted to see what M&M looked like in braille so he used the Mountbatten brailler. The bear inside the bag needed a braille labe that read "Zane's Bear." Since he often hits the dot 3 by mistake he already new how to make an apostrophe.

I have a friend with this. A blow to one eye as a child had her lose the vision in one eye and eventually she lost the vision in the other with another accident. Her child inherited the condition but his vision is stable. Had another couple of students with this condition also.

Blind Author Had Rich Material for Book

Born with albinism that left her with only 10% of her sight, she became completely blind about eight years ago, in part due to the complications of diabetes.




"I went to regular school," she said about her early life in Forest. "I never used a cane. Distances were a challenge, but I didn't know any different."
