Neighbors Federal Credit Union, long time partner to EBRPSS and to the I CARE program has asked that we distribute this information to teachers and students about a video and poster contest for students...concerning a financial smarts program for students.  It even comes with teacher lesson plans!
With Mrs. Atkins permission I am forwarding this to all staff for sharing with students.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend in the gorgeous weather!

2012 Young Millionaires Poster & Video Contest

Since 2008, the Louisiana Jump$tart Coalition, in an effort to inspire Louisiana youth to become more financially savvy, has sponsored a Financial Literacy Poster Contest. We're adding the creative medium of video this year for high school students.
Our poster and video contest is a great way to get young students thinking about how to manage money effectively and offers them a creative outlet to demonstrate their knowledge. It offers the opportunity for local and state recognition for student artwork and rewards winners with a recognition plaque and a cash prize.

How and Why to Tell Visually Impaired People About Audio And..Yes, Even Video Content Here on Associated Content

I liked this article because people don't think the blind can appreciate videos.  I always suggest that parents of my students register them for services from the state library.  In addition to books on tape there are decriptive videos of commercial films. A family member of one of my kids was worried for the child's dad because he was looking forward to sharing his Disney collection when his child was born. I suggested they check out the descriptive videos from the state library to see how they liked them, then perhaps they would like to purchase their own copies from WGBH. This article is by Jan Corn from Associated Content.

What He Said

When my daughter was a little, she could memorize the songs and lines from her favorites videos and music tapes. Her collection was of Sesame Street, Toddler Songs, Raffi, Disney Cartoons and a few Warner cartoons that my dad liked.

People WC (with children) know that toddlers have a favorite video or CD that has to be played continually until they know every word and every note. It is their job then to drill it into their parents' heads. Parents will then hear the entire video or music not only in their sleep but very often during waking hours. It's called SCVMT which stands for Small Child Video or Music Torture.

Another peculiarity of SCVMT is that the child may begin to quote such videos and music in conversation. My daughter once hopped in the front seat of my mother's car and when my sister placed her in the back in her toddler seat she exclaimed "I won't stand for this!" and pounded her fist on the head rest much like the prince's father in Disney's Cinderella.

My daughter is now 22 years old with very good taste in music. Why? Because of MMVPB--Mom Music/Video Payback. Besides that,I was brought up to be an avid reader and raised her to enjoy the world of books, too.

My husband will read Scripture and a few news articles. He can watch TV for several hours straight. To my amazement, he can watch some of his favorite shows and movies over and over. Let me add another "over" because the condition is just that severe. He has another syndrome similar to one mentioned above called HMMTLS or Husband Memorizes Movie/Television Lines Syndrome. It's torturous effect is often much worse than SCVMT.

When we were married two and a half years ago he panicked when he discovered he was moving into a house that had basic satellite programming without any of the movie channels. He quickly had me add his name to the account so that he could pay for all of the premium programming. Now when we cannot find how an emptied water bottle returned to the frig I hear the opening monologue for Law and Order I know where it originated. When I'm off to work on a cool day and need head covering I may hear him say to me, "That's some bad hat, Harry."

If M.A.S.H. the movie is on for the umpteenth time, I can hear the entire screenplay coming from his lips along with the movie. I hear "Hustle and Flow" and all it's rap lyrics.

My husband knows almost everything Denzel Washington ever uttered on screen. The one I like best is a line I'm inclined to use as well and that is from "Inside Man" when someone is stating the obvious: "Thank you, bank robber. I'm learning so much today."

I've discovered he's not the only one with this condition as he will sometimes be on the phone with a friend and they will have an entire conversation in movie lines.

"We all go a little mad sometimes." (Anthony Perkins as NORMAN BATES in Psycho)

Biographies and Videos

I found videos to accompany the biographies of famous people with visual impairments and now Proboards lets you link in from YouTube. The only problem is that children who go there at school where there is a network will have these videos blocked. YouTube does not show up on Groupwise/Novell networks..So if you are at work and your company is also on such a network the videos may appear as empty white boxes. You can wiat to see them at home on your home computer or at the library.

Go to the message board at http://mskathy.proboards30.com and look under "Biographies."

Ben Underwood

I'd found a video about Ben and was trying to relocate it to post here when I found out that Ben Underwood passed away in January. Here is the link to the web site his mom started about him.I will continue to look for the video as kids who are blind due to retinoblastoma are often amazing in their use of echolocation. One of my former students could skateboard and ride a bike as he snapped his fingers while another used to play hide and seek with me while stretching out her hands and listening for me breathing and sniffing the air for my location. She now teaches braille to the deaf-blind and is raising her own little girl.

Ben had retinoblastoma which is a cancer that attacks the eyes of babies and toddlers. His eyes were removed when he was three-years old. I first saw a news story on him about three years ago. Last year I read where the cancer had returned but I was not aware that he'd passed this past January. Click HERE to go to the web site Ben's mom has started about him. Meanwhile, I will be on the lookout for that amazing video.

Oh, yes! There's a place to send condolences and donations to Ben's family. I will certainly be sending up my prayers for them. I am comforted that Mrs. Underwood and her son were saved and that she sheds no tears in knowing where he is.

What Teacher's Make

This video has been going around. It's posted on TeacherTube.

Also, this email:

Good Morning! I just thought I'd share this with you all! Have a wonderful day!!!!!***

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?" To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began...) "Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental. You want to know what I make?"

(She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.

I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything.

I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator.
I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.
I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. I make my students stand, placing their hand over their heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, One Nation Under God, because we live in the United States of America.
Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life. (Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.) "Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant.... You want to know what I make?

I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make Mr. CEO?"

His jaw dropped, he went silent.

THIS IS WORTH SENDING TO EVERY TEACHER, EVERY CEO, EVERY PERSON YOU KNOW. Even all your personal teachers like mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and your spiritual leaders/teachers - Pastor's/Priests/Clergy.
